LECTURES ON BROKEN SYMMETRY AND
PHASE TRANSITIONS IN CONDENSED MATTER

These lectures will give a general introduction to broken symmetry and phase transitions in condensed matter. They are aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students specializing in condensed matter or statistical physics, as well as (possibly more senior) people in other fields who would like to get a general overview of this topic.

NORDIC PROJECTS AND CORRESPONDING FELLOWS
At its meetings on 9-10 October and 4-5 December, Nordita's Board decided to support the following Nordic projects: ``Supersymmetric Theories'' organized by P. Di Vecchia; ``Computational Materials and Surface Physics'' organized by B. Lundqvist; ``Non-Linear Phenomena in Accretion Disk Around Black Holes'' organized by M. Abramowicz; ``The Nature of Gamma Ray Bursts'' organized by R. Svensson; ``Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions'' project leader H. Heiselberg assisted by L. Csernai and V. Ruuskanen; ``Fundamental Constituents of Matter, Experiment-oriented Theory of Electroweak and Strong Interactions'' project leader P. Osland. The support is granted for a period of one year. Three of the projects were already presented in our December edition, and outlines of the remaining projects are given below or will be given in Nordita News 1996/2:

Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions
Organizers: Laszlo Csernai (Bergen), Vesa Ruuskanen (Jyvaskyla) and Henning Heiselberg (Nordita) (also coordinator).

The project intends to strengthen the connections among Nordic scientists working in the field of dense strongly interacting matter, quark-gluon plasmas and high energy heavy ion theory. Also we want to further close contacts to the strong experimental groups within the Nordic countries participating in heavy ion experiments at CERN and Brookhaven.

The project will concentrate initially on topics as formation, thermalization and expansion of quark-gluon plasmas formed in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions, subsequent freeze-out, hadron production and signals as chiral symmetry breaking, strangeness production, pion and kaon interferometry, etc. Persons interested in this field are welcome to contact us (e.g., hh@nordita.dk) for more information, to be added to our Nordic network distribution list or to submit requests for support. Fundamental Constituents of Matter
Experiment-oriented Theory of Electroweak and Strong Interactions.

This is a Nordic project aimed at a strengthening of theoretical research on particle phenomenology in the Nordic countries. Increased efforts in this area are especialy important at the present time, in order that the Nordic community may fully exploit the large experimental facilities HERA, LEP2 (soon running) and prepare for the LHC. The major questions to be addressed are the Higgs mechanism, CP and lepton number violation and the novel aspects of QCD: heavy quark physics, diffractive hard scattering, the theory of multiparton emission and the structure of the hadronic final states, higher twist effects, high orders of QCD perturbation theory and related topics. We have already organized a workshop in Lund, (December 3-5) and a further workshop is planned in Tartu, Estonia, during this summer.

Corresponding Fellows
As stated in the previous newsletter, the Nordita Board has appointed a number of Corresponding Fellows, and below we present short sketches of two more of them.

Sven Åberg, born in Malmö, Sweden. Master of science in technical physics, and technical doctor in mathematical physics at Lund Institute of Technology. Nordita fellow for three years. Main research activity is theoretical nuclear physics, but he is also working with quantum chaos. Research performed in close contact with experimental development. Several international collaborations. Main interests in theoretical nuclear physics: high-spin physics, exotic nuclear shapes, giant resonances, level densities, drip-line physics, and in quantum chaos: random matrix theory, level dynamics, diffusion. Just finished a six year term on the Swedish research council. Associate professor at Lund Institute of Technology, where he is also involved in teaching and administration.

Larus Thorlacius: Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, received Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University in 1989, held postdoctoral positions at Stanford University and the Institute for Theoretical Physics, UC Santa Barbara. He is currently assistant professor of physics at Princeton University and works on the theory of fundamental interactions, including string theory, quantum gravity, and black hole physics.

STRANGENESS AND DENSE MATTER
Nordita, Copenhagen, April 18-19 1996
During the week beginning April 15, Wolfram Weise, one of Nordita's Adjunct Professors, will be at Nordita, and on April 18-19 it is planned to hold a small workshop on strangeness and dense matter. Topics that it is intended to discuss include: Kaon-baryon systems at low energy. Kaon-nuclear interactions. Kaons in dense matter. Properties of hadrons in dense matter. Hyperon interactions. Astrophysical aspects.

NORDIC STATISTICAL PHYSICS WORKSHOP
Nordita, Copenhagen, May 9-11, 1996
There are several groups in the Nordic countries working on soft condensed matter, phase transitions, quantum critical phenomena, and complex systems. A common denominator for these fields is statistical physics which provides the precise theoretical language. The goal of this workshop is to assemble many of the contributors to this field, both to report on current progress and to outline directions for the future. We hope that this workshop will stimulate contacts and collaboration within the Nordic countries. Topics: 1. Polymers, membranes, and complex fluids; 2. Phase transitions, kinetics, and quantum critical phenomena; 3. Complex systems and modeling; The invited speakers include: D. Fisher, M. Cates, L. Peliti, D. Frenkel, H. Jensen, L. Turski, J. Krug, A. Bray and J.P. Bouchaud. The format of the workshop is morning and early afternoon lectures followed by poster sessions. The idea is to allow ample time for discussions. OPTICAL TELESCOPES OF TODAY AND TOMORROW
May 29 - June 2, 1996, Landskrona/Hven, Sweden
The symposium will be arranged in collaboration by Lund University, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and SPIE - the International Society for Optical Engineering. Emphasis of the symposium will be on techniques employed, planned or contemplated for the most powerful telescopes in operation, under construction, planned and discussed, as well as on instrumentation for these telescopes.

This meeting is one of the series of symposia on ``Large Telescopes and their Instrumentation'' regularly arranged jointly by ESO and SPIE. In the future, the symposia will take place on a regular basis, alternatively in Europe (normally Garching) and in the U. S. A. For the 1996 symposium, however, following the offer of the University of Lund, and in honour of the great astronomer Tycho Brahe, the symposium will be held in Sweden.

NORDIC SYMPOSIUM ON GALAXY EVOLUTION
Nordita, Copenhagen, June 11 - 15, 1996
A Nordic Symposium on Galaxy Evolution will be held at Nordita, Tuesday June 11 (pm) to Sat June 15 (am), covering topics in Galactic Dynamics, Supernovae and Chemical Evolution, Dwarf Galaxies, and Extragalactic Backgrounds. The organizers are: Bernard Pagel, Johannes Andersen, Bengt Gustafsson, David Lambert, Poul-Erik Nissen, Igor Novikov and Jesper Sommer-Larsen. Further details will be given in the next Newsletter.

NORDIC NONLINEAR DAYS, 1996.
24-27 August 1996 at Krogerup Højskole, Humlebaek, Denmark
Informal workshop on nonlinear physics in the Nordic countries. The workshop will discuss recent advances in the physics of Nonlinear Systems; including quantum chaos, coherent structures, spatiotemporal chaos, turbulence, time-series analysis, interfaces and criticality, and biological physics.

The workshop will bring together Nordic scientists that work on all aspects of nonlinear systems. In particular we encourage young scientists and students to participate. We invite students from the Nordic area to present short talks and posters.

Krogerup is very nicely located in Humlebaek just north of Copenhagen, with 1 hour train to the main train station. It gives optimal possibilities for informal contacts. Arrival will be from late Saturday afternoon the 24th of august, and departure either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Cost for participation and full lodging at Krogerup is 1700 DKK. Please notice that there are funds available to cover travel and stay at Krogerup. Students and young scientists are encouraged to apply.
