Post-doc Position in Astrophysical Dynamos at Nordita

NORDITA - The Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics

In connection with a 5-year project on Astrophysical Dynamos/, there is a vacancy for a 2-year post-doc position at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita) in Stockholm. The project is supported through an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council to improve our understanding of astrophysical dynamos. For details, see the project page http://www.nordita.org/~brandenb/AstroDyn/ on Astrophysical Dynamos.

The group consists of 4 PhD students, several post-docs (currently Piyali Chatterjee and Gustavo Guerrero, as well as Niccoló Bucciantini and Alexander Hubbard as Nordita fellows), together with Dhrubaditya Mitra, Matthias Rheinhardt, and Axel Brandenburg, as senior members. The research in the group focuses on improving our understanding of the solar dynamo. This involves work on a number of topics including

  • Turbulent dynamo action in spherical shells
  • The formation of active regions, sunspots, and coronal mass ejections from dynamo-generated magnetic fields
  • The ejection of dynamo-generated small-scale magnetic helicity in coronal mass ejections
  • Magnetic helicity fluxes and turbulent transport coefficients in hydromagnetic turbulence.
  • Dynamos from magneto-rotational and magnetic buoyancy instabilities
  • Dynamos from deep convection with tachocline
  • Solar cycle models and forecasts
  • Applications to galactic and laboratory dynamos

The successful candidates will work under the supervision of Professor Axel Brandenburg at Nordita.

    Qualifications

Eligible for the post-doc positions are applicants with a PhD completed not earlier than five years before the application deadline.

    Employment

The position is supported by a post-doc stipend for a period of 2 years and will start on September 1, 2011, or some other date to be agreed upon.

    Application

The applications should include a curriculum vitae together with a list of publications, 2 letters of recommendation, as well as a research plan. The application deadline is December 1, 2010, and applications must be filed though our web interface http://apps.nordita.org/.
