Background: original taken from a cosmological smooth-particle-hydrodynamics simulation of the dark matter distribution in the universe (Yoshida et al. 2003, ApJ 592, 645). In the densest filaments and knots, the first stars are believed to have formed. The 'red supernova' in the upper left corner has nothing to do with the simulation itself, however, it is placed in connection to a dense, potentially star-forming region.
