Travelogues....
I have been a disciple under the school of the late doyen of Odissi, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra for more than 15 years. Odissi is a form of Indian classical dance known for it's graceful and sensuous movements and usage of extensive footwork. I have also choreographed contemporary dance balles 'Life and the Five Elements' and 'Welcome the Monsoon' which were performed in Bangalore. I was associated with the dance troupe
'Smitalay'
in Mumbai, managed and directed by
Guru Jhelum Paranjape. On this site you may also read a very touching account
of the life of the late
Guru Sanjukta Panigrahi
who succumbed to cancer in the June of 1997. As an aside...the word 'Guru' in sanskrit means the destroyer of darkness or provider of knowledge. This word marks a disciple's respect for his/her teacher in the Indian socio-cultural setup.
