Computer Manager

NORDITA, Copenhagen

NORDITA has an opening for a Computer Manager from June 1, 2000.

The computer manager is responsible for maintaining and developing NORDITA's computer installation (Sun and Linux) and network. Another importanttask is to assist the scientific and administrative staff in computing matters. Experience with other platforms is an advantage.

The NORDITA computer system is closely linked to that of the Niels Bohr Institute for Astrophysics, Geophysics and Physics (NBIfAFG), and there is close collaboration between computer specialists at the two institutes. NORDITA and the NBIfAFG form a stimulating environment of advanced research in physics.

The successful applicant will be appointed for two years, with a possibility of extension. The salary depends on academic and computing experience.

Applications, including a CV and references, should be mailed before 15 May 2000 to:
The Director, NORDITA, Blegdamsvej 17, DK-2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark.
Email: nordita@nordita.dk

New Corresponding Fellows at NORDITA

NORDITA warmly welcomes Johannes (Hans) Bijnens and Tomas Bohr as new corresponding fellows.

After his Ph. D. studies at Caltech on chiral perturbation theory and the weak interaction in 1985, Hans Bijnens was a postdoc at DESY 1985-1987, an assistant at Munich University 1987-1989, and a CERN fellow 1990-92. In the following years he held a position as assistant professor at Nordita and since March 1997 he has been at the University of Lund, Department of Theoretical Physics 2 as a Forskartjänst.
His main present areas of research are:
i) Chiral Perturbation Theory: a low-energy effective theory of the strong interactions and one of the few model independent tools available in hadronic physics.
ii) CP-violation and standard model parameters: quark masses, mixing angles and the CP-violating mechanisms in and beyond the standard model. This involves general studies of the kaon and B-meson system.
iii) Strong interaction effects in low-energy precision experiments used for the study of the weak interaction and physics beyond the standard model physics.
iv) Connections between chiral perturbation theory, perturbative QCD and various phenomenological strong interaction models.

Tomas Bohr's interests will be presented in the next number of NORDITA News.

A conference on this subject will be held in Copenhagen on The conference, organized and financed by NORDITA and TAC, is aimed at covering the following topics:
1. Observational and theoretical arguments in favor of a non-vanishing cosmological constant.
2. Phenomenology of an accelerating universe.
3. The issue of huge vacuum energy in quantum physics.

NORDITA MEETING ON LOW-DIMENSIONAL PHYSICS IN SOLIDS AND TRAPPED ATOMS
August 31 - September 2, 2000.

The aim of this meeting is to gather physicists working in the general area of low-dimensional physics and atomic Bose condensates, with talks on various subjects, like the quantum Hall effect, high Tc superconductivity, Bose condensation and integrable models. During the last couple of years there has been quite some interest in two-dimensional aspects of Bose condensation, and there turn out to be close similarities between the physics of these systems and the quantum Hall effect and quantum dots. We thus believe that it will be very fruitful to bring these two communities together.

Further information and registration forms can be found at http://www.nordita.dk/~susanne/conf/.
Organizers: Susanne Viefers (susanne@ nordita.dk), Alan Luther (luther@nordita.dk ), Hans Hansson (hansson@physto.se).
Conference secretary: Ellen Pedersen (pedersen@nordita.dk ).
