Nordita News 2002/3

Petter Minnhagen, Nordita's New Director

We are delighted to announce that Petter Minnhagen, Professor of Physics at Umeå University, has been appointed Director for four years beginning August 1, 2002. Petter is no stranger to Nordita, having been a Nordita fellow from 1977-1980, a member of the Nordita Board 1996-2002, and chairman of the Board in 1998.

Petter was brought up in Lund, and he received his Ph. D. degree from Lund University in 1976. After postdoctoral positions at Nordita, Indiana University, and Lund University he became associate professor at Umeå University, where he was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1986. He has been a member of numerous committees, both in Sweden and internationally, and he is at present a member of the Swedish Research Council and of the European Union of Physics Research Organisations, EUPRO.

Ralf Rapp, new assistant professor in subatomic physics

Nordita welcomes Ralf Rapp, who took up his position as assistant professor on 1 September 2002. Ralf got his PhD degree in 1996 from the University of Bonn, having done research at the Jülich Research Center and at the University of Illinois in Urbana. He then joined the Nuclear Theory Group at SUNY in Stony Brook, first as post-doctoral fellow and later as Research Scientist and Assistant Professor. His main research interests are in the areas of intermediate energy nuclear physics, relativistic heavy ion collisions and QCD at finite density.

Assistant Professor in Theortical Astrophysics
http://www.nordita.dk/positions/

Nordita expects to have an opening for an assistant professor starting in September 2003, or some other date to be agreed upon. The position is in theoretical astrophysics, which include astroparticle physics and cosmology. The successful applicant is expected to guide fellows at roughly the postdoctoral level, to interact with colleagues at Nordita and elsewhere in the Nordic countries, and to take an active part in the organization of meetings and courses. The position provides excellent opportunities to pursue original research and to have contact with a wide range of developments in theoretical physics. The initial appointment will be for three years, with a possibility of renewal up to a total of six years. Deadline: October 15, 2002.
