GRAVITATION AND COSMOLOGY

Gravitation and Cosmology

Our research endeavors in gravitation and cosmology are dedicated to understanding the dynamics of the universe and the composition of matter that it contains. It has only been during the last two decades that telescope technology advanced enough to allow this research area to truly flourish, giving us for the first time the opportunity to study the origin of the universe and also to speculate on its eventual fate. Indeed the wealth of recently obtained data in gravitation and cosmology has revealed many puzzles.

Research at Nordita is motivated by the fundamental questions in cosmology and gravitation and focuses on finding theoretical explanations for three of the presently most pressing unanswered questions, that is the origin of dark energy and dark matter, the physics of the first moments of the universe, and whether Einstein's theory of General Relativity is fundamentally the correct theory for gravity, or whether it has to be amended to explain our observations.

In the research area of Gravitation and Cosmology, Nordita faculty collaborates closely with the Oskar Klein Center in the adjacent AlbaNova Main building from Stockholm University.
